Splice
Capstone Project
Zines are miniature magazines that can feature anything from collages to photography and can be physical or digital. They are usually distributed on a small, local, scale. My zine Splice will cover how Generation Z has dealt with the pandemic and what art they’ve created and consumed during it. The zine will have original work and art submissions from peers. When asking for submissions, there will be prompts to inspire those who submit. Splice will have categories such as Staying Connected and Escapism, both relevant and current topics people have had to deal with. The zine’s target audience is Generation Z, specifically those who have an interest in art, such as photography and poetry. To prepare for this project, I plan on researching zine culture through reading archives at UMD libraries. In regards to content for the zine, I will experiment using different 35mm film types to figure out the project’s aesthetic. Splice will not only be cathartic for those taking part in it but will act as a time capsule for this current moment in our lives.
